Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible for service from NIA?
Serving senior citizens, especially the frail elderly, is a priority to us. We will also assist people
with disabilities and individuals and families who are experiencing difficult life situations.
Where does NIA get its funding?
Neighbors in Action received its initial startup funding through a grant from the MN Department of
Human Services. This funding will end in June of 2011. We also receive funding from the Great
Rivers United Way and from donors who believe in our cause. Because these sources are not
guaranteed from year to year, it will not be possible for us to sustain the program without the
financial support of those who benefit from our services.
How much do services cost?
NIA has developed a sliding fee scale for our members which adjusts the cost of services based
on household income. It is important to us that anyone who needs our help receives it, regardless
of their ability to contribute. However, it does cost money to operate NIA and in most cases it is
much more cost effective for an individual to pay for the services they need in order to remain in
their home rather than paying for costly nursing home or assisted living services. NIA staff will
develop a service agreement so you know up front exactly what your fee for services will be.
